- Resource = anything in the environment that can be used to satisfy human needs, provided it is technologically accessible, economically feasible and culturally acceptable.
- Classification by:
- Origin: biotic (plants, animals) vs abiotic (rocks, metals).
- Exhaustibility: renewable (solar, wind, water — some sub-categories renewable within a cycle) vs non-renewable (coal, petroleum).
- Ownership: individual, community, national, international.
- Status of development: potential (Rajasthan solar/wind), developed, stock, reserves.
- Planning is essential in India due to uneven distribution — some regions rich, others poor in resources.
- Levels of planning: national, state, district and local.
- First Irrigation Commission (1901) and successive Five-Year Plans (1951–) built resource frameworks.
- Land use in India: net sown area, forest area, land not available for cultivation, permanent pasture, current fallow, culturable waste.
- Land degradation: causes include over-grazing, deforestation, over-irrigation (salinisation), mining, industrial effluent. Solutions: afforestation, shelter belts, controlled grazing, proper drainage.
- Soil types in India:
- Alluvial soil — Ganga-Brahmaputra plains; fertile, rich in potash, phosphoric acid, lime; supports rice, wheat, sugarcane.
- Black soil (regur) — Deccan plateau (Maharashtra, MP, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh); retains moisture; ideal for cotton.
- Red and yellow soil — Deccan uplands, Odisha, Chhattisgarh; iron gives red colour; yellow when hydrated.
- Laterite soil — high rainfall + high temperature (Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, MP hills); good for tea, coffee, cashew.
- Arid soil — Rajasthan, Gujarat; sandy, saline; low humus.
- Forest/mountain soil — hilly regions; varies with altitude.
- Soil erosion: sheet erosion (thin layers), gully erosion (bad lands like Chambal ravines), wind erosion (arid areas), coastal erosion.
- Conservation of soil: contour ploughing, terrace farming, strip cropping, shelter belts, afforestation.
- Sustainable development = development that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations (Rio Earth Summit 1992, Agenda 21).
