  • Mineral = natural substance with a definite chemical composition; usually mined for use in industry.
  • Classification: metallic (ferrous — iron, manganese, chromite; non-ferrous — copper, bauxite, lead, zinc), non-metallic (mica, limestone, gypsum), energy minerals (coal, petroleum, uranium).
  • Iron ore: mostly hematite and magnetite; belts in Odisha-Jharkhand, Durg-Bastar-Chandrapur (Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra), Bellary-Chitradurga (Karnataka), Maharashtra-Goa.
  • Manganese: Odisha (largest), Karnataka, MP, Maharashtra; used in steelmaking.
  • Copper: Balaghat (MP), Khetri (Rajasthan), Singhbhum (Jharkhand); malleable, ductile, used in wiring.

  • Energy resources:
  • Conventional (non-renewable): coal (Jharkhand's Jharia oldest and largest; Raniganj in WB; Damodar Valley), petroleum (Digboi — oldest field in Assam; Mumbai High; Bombay Basin; Krishna–Godavari basin), natural gas (KG basin, Rajasthan, Tripura), nuclear (uranium at Jaduguda, Kalpakkam and Tarapur reactors), hydel power (major dams).
  • Non-conventional (renewable): solar (Gujarat & Rajasthan largest potential), wind (Muppandal in Tamil Nadu is Asia's largest wind farm), tidal (Gulf of Kachchh, Sundarbans), geothermal (Manikaran in HP, Puga in Ladakh), biogas (biomass in villages).
  • Petroleum is fossil fuel formed from marine organisms; extracted through wells (onshore and offshore).
  • Sustainable mining needs environmental clearance, rehabilitation of mine workers, and reforestation of mined land.
